Fuel cards are designed to help carriers of all sizes obtain significant discounts on diesel, as well as savings on other services. They are essentially a partnership between the fuel card provider and the fuel merchants which are typically truck stops. Certain truck stops will offer a discounted price for the fuel card holders and the fuel card provider will in turn inform its card holders of the discounts to drive more volume to these truck stops, everybody benefits. These discounts are usually different at each fueling location and can change daily.
How are fuel card discounts calculated?
Retail-minus: which basically means that a certain amount of cents per gallon will be discounted from the retail price, so for example lets say you have a $0.14 discount for all truck stops of a certain brand and the retail price (the price you see at the pump) is $2.50 per gallon, then you would effectively pay $2.36 per each gallon.
Cost-plus: this is a little more complicated to explain but it essentially means that the price you’ll pay for fuel is the truck stop’s cost plus some fees. With our fuel card program you’ll be able to see the prices updated in real time on your mobile app so you’ll always know what you’re going to pay and can plan ahead. At some locations you’ll find that the cost-plus type discounts offer significant savings, we’ve seen discounts of over $0.50 at some locations, yikes!
